Just your thoughts

Ok, Campbell Chuncky Clam Chowder

Purchased 11-2005 (I know because we always date our stock)

It gets pushed to the back. I go to the pantry

I read the can and it says Best by 6-14-2007

How many of you open the can and eat it?
How many toss the can?

Are these dates for real.

Me, I eat it, the wife, shes not so sure :) little to cautious or no?

On a side note I gotta get a better handle on rotating our stock
It takes so much time!

open it, cook it if it smells ok, eat it. if it tastes bad, give it to the dog.
cans keep a long time.
back in mid seventies, we were eating c rations from ww2 stock. occasionally we had a bulged can, or a "stinker" that we threw away. most were still ok.

I don't see how the expiration dates on canned foods can be real because I've opened cans of fruit, pumpkin filling, tomatoes, condensed milk, tuna, and a few other things that were more than two years past date and they were perfectly fine. I've never had anything that as older than that.

In any case, I agree with Fullpower. Open it and if it smells and looks good, eat it.

I recently opened, and ate a can of Campbells chicken noodle that was dated in 2004. It was okay. The consistency of it had changed a little, but it was okay. My guess is that I wouldn't have wanted to wait another year to try it out!

90% chance that it is still nutritionally valuable, and safe.

If it doesn't spit or spurt or hiss when opening it, and it smells and looks fine, I'd go for it. Safety level is probably 99+% if it doesn't do any of the former and passes the appetizing tests - nutritional value may have been lost, though.

Probably safe. I saw a big story on CNN this morning about a grocery store chain that only sells expired goods. People are flocking there because they save 50% over normal prices and there are no reports of bad food.

I guess the stores pick them up from the main chain stores for pennys on the dollar and consolidate and distribute it. Sounds like one heck of a great business to be in during times like these.

Cook it and eat it.

Some guy in England found 50 year old cans and has been eating them with no problems. Just let your nose be your guide.

I would assume it was safe if it wasn't bulging and didn't look funny or smell off. Then, I'd throw it away. Oh sure, if the bombs had dropped, and I was holed up in a bunker, I'd eat it, but there's just something about the idea of eating clam chowder that's a year out of date that doesn't appeal to me. "You see, doc, I knew the clams were old, but..."

Then again, I did taste-test some MRE meats from 1985 last year, so my caution doesn't always prevail. They were weird, but they didn't make me sick. Imagine ham that melts in your mouth...

I ate 1999 dated Campbells tomato soup last year... meaning it was probably
made in 1997... it was fine.
A month or so later I opened a 2002 can and it was bad.
Date doesn't seem to mean much.

Much of the new soup however has poptop lids instead of the sealed lids that
need a can opener. It's convenient but I wonder if they will last as long as the
old style.

When people are starving they aren't going to be throwing out anything
unless it is obviously gone bad... stinkin, putrid bad.

I wouldn't want to be your dog.

It's the "clam and dairy" part of it that would give me suspicion.

give it to a beggar with a "hungry homeless veteran" sign on the freeway on ramp at prime begging/happy hour time, ie 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. be prepared to do a fast getaway when he hurls the can and some choice curses your way. food bank donation at full tax writeoff value less dangerous, also less fun
